Phnom Penh, June 17, 2024 – Prime Minister Hun Manet presided over the groundbreaking ceremony of the twin flyovers at the intersection of Hun Sen Blvd. and National Road 2. This marks the first major infrastructure project under his leadership and the seventh legislature of the National Assembly.

Expressing his vision during the event, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the strategic significance of this development in bridging the gap between Phnom Penh and surrounding provinces, thereby enhancing connectivity and easing traffic congestion.

He highlighted that Phnom Penh's population nearing three million has led to an infrastructural demand to accommodate nearly two million vehicles. With such growth, the Prime Minister acknowledged the urgent need for comprehensive urban planning and infrastructure development.

Prime Minister Hun Manet outlined the specifics of the project, noting the flyovers would span 622 meters with each bridge facilitating three lanes of one-way traffic. The construction will feature modern engineering techniques, including six bridge piers and girders with a maximum spacing of 45 meters, ensuring robust structural integrity.

The project, which is a collaboration between the Phnom Penh administration and the private sector, is estimated to cost $16.2 million and is scheduled for completion within 12 months. It aims to not only improve traffic flow but also enhance the quality of life by reducing travel time for thousands daily.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Hun Manet also touched on broader urban development issues including parking shortages, public transportation, and environmental considerations. He urged the integration of green spaces and modern urban facilities to foster a sustainable and resilient urban landscape.

The Prime Minister encouraged the involvement of the private sector in the development of modern parking solutions and highlighted the need for advanced planning in road construction, including considerations for drainage systems and public utilities to prevent future flooding.

Concluding his speech, Hun Manet reiterated the government's commitment to enhancing public safety, improving traffic management, and promoting the use of public transportation as part of a broader strategy to transform Phnom Penh into a smart, sustainable city aligned with ASEAN standards.
